Fire extinguishers are a great tool,
but like any tool, you need to learn how to use them properly and safely. Using
a fire extinguisher on even small fires takes practice and quick thinking so
there is not a delay in calling 9-1-1. The Red Cross suggests learning how to
properly use fire extinguishers by contacting your local fire department to get
training.
Use a portable fire extinguisher only
if you have been trained by the fire department and the fire is under these
conditions: the fire is confined to a small area and is not growing, the room
is not filled with smoke, everyone has exited the building, and that the fire
department has been called.
Remember the word PASS when using the fire extinguisher. Pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing it
away from you. Aim low. Point the
extinguisher at the base of the fire. Squeeze
the lever slowly and evenly. Sweep
the nozzle from side to side.
For more information on fire
extinguishers contact your local fire department or visit www.redcross.org/swny.
